San Diego, known as “America’s Finest City” and at one time referred to as the “Tuna Capital of the World”, is a place where long expanses of stunning coastline meet the sea, set with mountain backdrops and sunsets that clog Instagram feeds. The city’s aesthetics and ideal climate drive flocks of tourists to the city on an annual basis. To avid sportfishermen, however, San Diego represents one of the most iconic and dynamic fisheries in the world. A place where dreams are made and memories never forgotten.

THE RUNDOWN

To fish in California, a fishing license is required. These can be purchased both online and at most local tackle shops. You can purchase one-day, two-day, 10-day, and annual sportfishing licenses. For annual and 10-day licenses, you will need an Ocean Enhancement Validation which is just under $7 and required to fish in the ocean south of Santa Barbara County.

Online License Sales and Services

English is the primary language spoken in San Diego with Spanish being a close second due to the proximity to the Mexican border.

The US dollar is the official currency in San Diego.

A foreign national traveling to the United States for tourism needs a visitor visa (B-2) unless qualifying for entry under the Visa Waiver Program. Tourism is a short visit for vacation, for visiting family and friends, or for medical treatment. More information here.

Traveling to San Diego is incredibly convenient. Most US cities offer flights to San Diego International Airport. Another option is to fly into Tijuana International Airport and use the Cross Border Express to get into San Diego.

Renting a car is very accessible at San Diego International Airport. Uber, Lyft and other rideshare apps are another effective way to get around.

SEASONALITY

San Diego’s climate exhibits a mild and semi-arid Mediterranean-like climate with distinct seasonality. The city experiences warm and sunny weather throughout the year, making it a popular destination. Summers, from July to September, are typically dry and warm, with average temperatures ranging from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). Fall, from October to November, brings milder temperatures and occasional rain showers. Winters are mild and pleasant, with temperatures averaging around 65°F (18°C). Spring, from March to June, sees a gradual increase in temperatures and blooming flora. Typically May gray and June gloom describe the overcast conditions of these Spring to Summer transition months. Overall, San Diego offers a relatively consistent and enjoyable climate, making it an ideal year-round destination.

THE FISHING

flyer
San Diego has a long and celebrated fishing history which helped define the city’s cultural foundation today. Throughout the 20th century, much of America’s tuna canning was based in San Diego. The Pacific Tuna Canning Co., Bumble Bee Tuna, VanKamp Seafoods, and Starkist have all been headquartered in San Diego at one point in history. These large commercial fleets were largely operated by local Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese fishermen who are celebrated today as a major facet of city’s work-force heritage. San Diego came to be known as the “Tuna Capital of the World,” and by the 1960’s Tuna was the city’s third largest industry, behind the Navy and Aerospace. The San Diego sportfishing fleet has also flourished and grown to be one of the largest, most developed, and successful in the nation with multiple landings and boats attracting passengers on an international scale. It is no coincidence both the commercial and sportfishing industries have thrived in San Diego – the fishing is great. The past decade requires a better adjective as a descriptor of how fishing has been, however… It has been downright incredible!

  • Regionality: As California’s southernmost city, San Diego gives anglers access to numerous offshore banks and inshore fisheries on both sides of the international maritime border. The waters off San Diego offer an incredible array of gamefish that congregate over complex seafloor topography featuring canyons, underwater mountain ranges, and islands.
  • Seasonality: The summer months bring in warm-water pelagic species such as Yellowfin, Dorado, Yellowtail, and Bluefin Tuna that are regularly caught within day range of San Diego Bay. Peak season for these pelagics is June – October when sea surface temperatures are close-to or above 70 degrees.
  • General Tactics: Drifting near offshore kelps, fishing local islands, trolling to locate open-water schools, kite-fishing, and casting on crashing fish are some general methods for approaching the fishery successfully.
  • Deep dropping for Swordfish has recently taken off in San Diego, with anglers seeing success implementing approaches similar to those used in Florida.
  • Inshore fishing for halibut, rockfish, calico bass, and white seabass can be excellent depending on changing water conditions, spawning locations, and weather patterns.
  • San Diego Bay’s fishing is also incredibly consistent throughout the year featuring hard hitting Spotted Bay Bass, Corvina, Halibut, and even Bonefish.

No description of San Diego fishing would be complete, however, without adequate homage to the star of the show: The Bluefin Tuna.

In the past decade, the sportfishing world has seen a dramatic change in focus regarding the methodology and gear employed for big game off the San Diego coast.

To put it simply, San Diego entered a centennial “Big Bluefin Era” .

Kite fishing for XL Tuna has been employed around the world for decades… Early Avalon Tuna Club anglers based out of Catalina Island experienced a similar big Bluefin phenomenon and utilized antiquated renditions of kite gear in the early 20th century. The fishing kite is most notably attributed to legendary Catalina sportfisherman George Farnsworth who fished a series of high spots aptly named the Farnsworth Bank today. Recently, the practice made a resurgence in Southern California following the last El Nino event in 2015. This seemed to happen organically in response to the incredible volume of triple-digit fish that began appearing on regional banks. The scale of gear typically used for offshore fishing in San Diego was inadequate for the grade of fish arriving at that time. Lines were chewed through, reels exploded, and rods broke. A few west coast anglers began throwing poppers with strong braided line and heavy fluorocarbon leaders. They landed large fish with success on jig sticks, although the process came with brutal fights and strained backs synonymous with long rod fishing. The tactic caught on, poppers and surface lures flew off tackle shop shelves and chiropractors filled their schedules. Inevitably, however, the more appropriate and less painful technique

of flying the kite for trophy bluefin became a staple offshore technique again. Flying fish or artificial imitations, such as the California Flyer, became the favored method for targeting these fish. The California Flyer stands out as the ultimate artificial rendition of a flying fish rivals or, at times, surpasses a rigged dead flying fish in terms of fishing efficiency and results. Rail roads and high-capacity reels loaded with spectra and heavy leaders allow anglers to land giants in a much shorter time frame. “Cow” bluefin tuna exceeding the 200llb mark are now regularly landed and what used to be an anomaly has now become a norm. For those who still have an affinity for the jig stick, some of the best topwater fishing one could hope for can be found across the Southern California Bight. Acres of foaming bluefin are frequently seen offshore and sometimes come within just a few miles from the beach. On days when the fish are frenzied on the surface, poppers, surface irons, stick baits, and colt snipers are highly effective. Southern California fishing has been revolutionized to meet the requirements inherent to targeting a grade of Bluefin that may not return any given year. San Diego sportfisherman have been enjoying the opportunity of a lifetime and should be cherishing every minute of it.

SPORTBOAT LANDINGS

San Diego is home to a few of the most developed sportfishing fleets in the nation. Fisherman’s Landing, Point Loma Sportfishing, H&M Sportfishing, and Seaforth Landing host a variety of boats servicing long range, multi-day, full day, and half-day trips. These boats typically run non-stop during the spring, summer, and fall months, following the fish throughout the season. With some planning and proactive booking, anglers can target fish out of San Diego from the Point Loma Kelp just outside the harbor entrance, to the Hurricane Bank off Baja California Sur. San Diego International Airport is just a short drive away from the Sportboat landings.

Mitch’s Seafood, established in 2008 by three families with a long history of fishing in the Point Loma area of San Diego, specializes in fresh seafood from the waters off San Diego. We are located on San Diego’s working waterfront with a view of the fishing fleet, and we focus on simply prepared, California style seafood and craft beer & wine from San Diego and California.

Our seafood comes almost exclusively from the waters off San Diego and Northern Baja. Most of our fish is either caught by us or by fishermen that we know. Furthermore, as fishermen, stewardship of the ocean is extremely important to us. At Mitch’s Seafood, we utilize only sustainably caught seafood, and work with a number of groups to ensure a clean and vibrant future for our beaches and oceans.

Our preference towards local food doesn’t stop with our seafood. We offer craft beer from many of San Diego’s famous breweries and wine from family vineyards throughout California. We utilize many nearby farms as well for our produce, organic chicken and grass fed beef.

Seafood and the ocean are our passion here. Whether you have lived in San Diego all of your life, or are a visitor here for the first time, Mitch’s Seafood is the place to get a taste of what our local waters have to offer.

We grew up in and on the water. Surfing, diving, boating & fishing the beaches and blue water of San Diego and Baja California. We still do.

Fresh local seafood has always been a part of the experience. Fish tacos on the docks in Ensenada, where they were invented. Ahi sashimi in the galley on the boat ride home, sliced from that morning’s tuna catch. White Sea Bass pulled from the Baja surf and grilled on the spot over a mesquite campfire. Our menu is how we share those experiences with you. Every day we start with the freshest fish we can get, and carefully prepare it to enhance its flavor. Every plate, every sandwich, every fish taco is an expression of fresh & local.

Whenever possible, we buy local fish directly from the fishermen who catch them – or we catch them ourselves. Ask the guy behind the counter “what looks good?” He might cut you a piece of Yellowtail he caught off La Jolla himself – early this morning.

El Pescador first opened its doors in Del Mar in July of 1974. A young ambitious nineteen year old surfer named Jeff Norris bought some refrigeration equipment for less than a thousand dollars. He recruited sixteen year old Jim Mahoney and together they hand crafted a display case out of wood and fiberglass and began selling fresh seafood to the once small town of Del Mar.

Within twelve months retail fish sales were booming, but the public demanded more than just raw seafood. They wanted fresh fish to eat on the spot! Soon after Norris served El Pescador’s first prepared food: a shrimp cocktail and lemonade for $1.00. By the end of 1976 Norris had a complete seafood deli to accompany his thriving fresh fish market.

In March of 1978, sixteen year old Sean Shannon traded his paper route in for his first real job, “El Pescador-clean-up-kid”. Seven years later Shannon opened his own store on Pearl Street in La Jolla. Since then the menu has increased to an array of char-grilled and sauteed seafood items. The full service fish market remains unsurpassed for its quality and selection. It has now been proudly serving San Diegans for over thirty years.

EXPLORE

San Diego is known to have some of the best weather in the United States, with an annual average temperature of 64 degrees. From June through September, you can expect weather in the 70–80-degree range. The ideal climate, proximity to the ocean, and beautiful landscapes the make San Diego an amazing place to explore. The city’s historical and natural attractions, world class surf, nightlife, sports teams, golf, and proximity to Mexico offer visitors endless opportunities for epic experiences.

SURF SPOTS

San Diego has long been known as a surfing mecca and as one of the first places in the continental U.S. where the sport truly took off – eventually helping to define Southern California culture. While the fishing off San Diego has been downright remarkable the past decade, the city has always attracted swarms of tourists and transplants who are drawn the amazing surf the San Diego coast provides.

With fun beach breaks, some world class reefs, jettys, and some notable big waves spots that are capable of holding shape in XL NorthWest winter swells, San Diego has something for everyone who has an interest in surfing.

SUNSET CLIFFS

Sunset Cliffs features miles of reefs that differ in terms of shape, quality, and typical crowd levels. These reefs generally break best at low tide can vary in quality depending on conditions, swell size, and swell direction from slow beginner waves to double overhead hollow barrels. The walk down to the water can be dangerous and tricky to navigate.

PACIFIC BEACH

PB is a tourism hub for San Diego, particularly for the college community. This 3-mile stretch of sand bottom beach tends to be packed with beachgoers and characters alike. Once you find a parking spot amidst the chaos, there are plenty of waves to surf. The swell impact on the open beach forms strong rip currents which push sand onto various banks, creating multiple peaks. When the conditions are prime, you can find a clean hollow barrel.

WINDANSEA

A regional classic with a surfing history that spans back decades. This wave put SD on the map as a big wave spot in the early days of competitive surfing. The rock reef can hold XXL swell in a variety of mixed conditions. This wave draws crowds from all over SoCal, but be sure to mind your manners in the lineup. The locals at this spot are not afraid to call you out for poor surf etiquette.

SCRIPPS PIER

This beach break sits right in front of UCSD and tends to get extremely crowded with dedicated locals and college students. The sandbars can hold relatively clean and large waves for a beach break, often looked at as a more manageable option to its neighbor break on the north end, Blacks Beach. Scripps is located in the middle of a Marine Protected Area so be sure to leave your fishing rod at home and shuffle your feet.

BLACKS

San Diego’s famous break, known for its ability to hold much larger swell than the rest of SD County. This is largely due to the presence of the massive deep-water canyon that lies just offshore from the beach. The rapid change in ocean depth can produce waves that are 15+ feet with wide open barrels. During winter swells it is not uncommon to see the lineup filled with pro surfers and the cliff lined with photographers. Big or small, the 3 peaks of this accredited beach break produce the best opportunity for a clean, hollow tube in San Diego.

CARDIFF REEF

A well-known reef that was one of the first surf spots popularized in SD County. On small swells, this break is known as a longboarding hotspot. The right-hander holds along the reef, delivering a clean and smooth face for multiple turns. The left-hander off of this peak holds as well, allowing surfers to choose between their forehand and backhand. When bigger swells arrive, Cardiff is a safe bet when it comes to picking a spot for a mixture of features. The right produces a barreling takeoff that eases up into a long, cleanfaced right. On days 6ft+, the left-hander is not for the faint hearted.
